Wraith Race is an escape room. Players, usually in teams of two, must find their way to the end of a course that is split into levels or chapters. Each level or chapter contains a range of puzzles, as well as lots of traps and trickery – for example, minecart rails that the players need to ride to progress, but that lead directly into lava.
In the live and pre-recorded versions of the event, there are one or two “Admins” who follow the players around. These Admins are most known for making cryptic or generally unhelpful comments, and mocking the players if they fall for traps or if things go wrong – although they will on occasion be supportive, for example giving hints or gifts.
HISTORY
Wraith Race is WraithStation’s very first show and has cropped up in a number of formats since:
Wraith Race: Escape From Castle Wraith (2021)
Players navigated three levels of puzzles in a blackstone castle. This was turned into a three-part YouTube gameshow.
Wraith Race: Trick Or Treat (2023)
Players sought to escape the Wizard’s Courtyard, featuring an assortment of different rooms and areas including a bedroom, a library, a broken staircase, a maze, and a crypt. There were opportunities for both selected content creators and community members to get involved. Streamers could apply to take part in a “creator week”, racing other duos for the fastest time and a spot on the in-game leaderboard for when the map was released to the public a week later on PlanetMinecraft. After the public release, a speedrunning competition was held over ten days, with £50 (approximately $60 USD) of Steam credits as a prize for the winner.
